Switzerland: Intern – Humanitarian Fragile Context Branch (HFCB)

Summary of Principal Functions:

Take active and supportive part in the Humanitarian and Fragile Contexts Branch (HFCB) work of the UNFPA Office in Geneva.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Humanitarian Coordination Advisor, the Humanitarian and Fragile Context Branch Intern will:

  • Assist the Humanitarian Coordination Adviser and Humanitarian and Fragile Contexts Branch (HFCB) in the field of Humanitarian Coordination; both UNFPA-internal and at the inter-agency level; notably but not limited to member agencies of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC).

  • Assist with implementation of World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) commitments and actions and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030, as well as provision of technical support to UNFPA’s Regional Office in Eastern Europe and Central Asia within UNFPA’s mandated areas of work, and coordination support and liaison with humanitarian cluster lead agencies in implementing Humanitarian (SRP) for Ukraine.

  • Participate, as and when required, in humanitarian cluster meetings in Geneva, report back on IASC meetings relevant to UNFPA, assist in attending and reporting back on briefings organized by OCHA and UNHCR, and support the UNFPA Liaison Office staff with other programmes and assignments as required.

  • Support monitoring of UNFPA’s participation in Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) and Regional Response Plan (RRP) processes, including provision of assistance and advice to field offices, CERF reporting, and assisting with refinement of HRP guidelines for UNFPA field offices;

  • Assist with research into humanitarian issues. Assignments may include policy, statistical, media, or legal research. Some of the topics will include reproductive and maternal health, obstetric fistula, female genital mutilation, and gender-based violence;

  • Research and collect data and information for background papers, briefing notes and presentations.

Kindly note that the above list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and there might be other ad hoc tasks to perform, also depending on the candidate's motivation and initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

Enrolled in Advanced University Degree curriculum in the fields of Political Science, International Law, Social Sciences, Public Health, Gender Studies, Sociology.

Strong interest in and preferably experience in humanitarian preparedness, response and recovery. An interest in population and development issues is essential.

Knowledge and Experience:

· Computer literacy;

· Ability to work independently;

· Demonstrate integrity with regard to the UN values and ethical standards;

· Ability to work in close co-operation with other individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Languages:

Fluency in English with excellent oral and written communication skills.

Fluency in French is strongly desirable.

UNFPA Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA.
