The Position:
The Communication Associate is responsible for providing internal and external communication related support to all humanitarian related events, visibility and media coverage.
You will provide technical and administrative support to the Humanitarian team in the implementation of the various communication and visibility events, partnering with online, broadcast and print media, as well as national and provincial institutions to upscale the coverage of SRH and GBV response in emergencies.
You will report directly to the International Humanitarian Coordinator.

Since strengthening UNFPA ability to perform media and communication activities in emergency settings is one of the corporate minimum preparedness actions, it is key to ensure that the office communication plan includes media and communication in emergencies equipped with fact sheets, key messages, a list of national and provincial, media contacts and media relations departments in partner organizations, country and regional profiles on issues related to women, which can be updated and used in an emergency.
Job Purpose:
In a complex operating environment, you will contribute to the effective communication of UNFPA activities in the areas of sexual reproductive health and gender based violence in emergencies.
You will ensure that substantial programme events, success stories and good practices, along with challenges and gaps that must be addressed, are well documented and communicated in social, broadcast and print media, highlighting the value-added roles of partners and donors will.
You will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with the media, counterparts in government, multi-lateral and bilateral donor agencies and civil society in support of UNFPA’s programme.
You would be responsible for:
A. Rendering assistance in planning, design and execution of internal and external strategies for communications
• Facilitate quality administrative and communication support in the formulation, implementation, monitoring and assessment of approved Communication Plan of the Country Programme including that of the humanitarian portfolio.
• Draft press releases, news articles, key messages, speeches around the SRH and GBV in Emergencies initiatives of UNFPA.
• Identify and develop sample storylines for publication and substantive articles on key issues at the core of UNFPA’s mandate.
C. Providing assistance in maintenance of the Country Office website, web-based knowledge management system and social media platforms
• Draw up and submit humanitarian related articles for the office website ensuring consistency of the materials.
• Contribute to the implementation of a social media strategy leading to the development and implementation of UNFPA Pakistan Facebook and Twitter accounts, with a possibility of Instagram.
D. Providing support to advancing partnership, advocacy and resource mobilization endeavors
• Contribute to developing and maintaining close contacts with national counterparts, donors, civil society and private sector for the implementation of the communication and publication strategies.
• Assist in preparing the CO contributions to donor meetings and related public information events.
• Facilitate relevant documentation, including project summaries, conference papers, speeches and donor profiles.
• Assist in preparing newsletters and programme updates for development partners and donors in close collaboration with programme staff.
E. Programme and Media Campaigns
• Support the Country Office during public information and promotional campaigns on UNFPA activities to position UNFPA as a leader within the development space and social media; Guide and facilitate campaigns in the local and social media that position UNFPA’s programme and new endeavours.
• Facilitate promotion and dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship programme initiatives and publications.
• Provide support to key office and programme events, success stores and good practices highlighting the value-added roles of partners and attribution are communicated through local and social media.
F. Knowledge Building and Management
• Provide assistance in strategic documentation of good practices and innovative programme endeavors in close collaboration with the programme team;
Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Advanced university degree in communications, media relations, journalism or relevant social sciences
Knowledge and Experience:
• At least 2 years of increasingly responsible professional experience at the national level in public relations, communications or advocacy;
• Substantive knowledge and practical experience in communication strategy development;
• Strong media contacts and proven success pitching stories to media outlets;
• Excellent research and writing skills, with experience writing reports, newsletters and programme updates, video production and developing web content;
• Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems (Drupal is a plus);
• Client oriented and strong team work;
• Proficiency in current office software applications;
• Knowledge of the UN system would be an advantage.
Languages:
Fluency in English and Urdu are required, knowledge of local languages is an asset.
